The importance of the right words.
In Radiotherapy the use of the right terminology is important for a clearer communication and reducing unnecessary alarm among patients, caregivers, policymakers, the media, and colleagues outside this specialty.
A better wording does not weaken science; rather, it can support informed consent, shared decision-making, and public trust in RT as a curative, organ-sparing, high-value therapy.
For this reason, when we talk with patients and the public, but also inside the radiotherapy community and in scientific papers, we should use
* “Side effects” or “Adverse events” instead of “Toxicity”
* “Dose guidance” instead of “Dose constraints”
* “Organs of interest”instead of “Organs at risk”
* “(Set-up) variations”instead of “(Set-up) errors”
Patient-centered terminology can make a difference by complementing technical advances and strengthening trust without compromising scientific precision.
