European Virtual Human Twins (VHT) Initiative

Project TETRIS had the opportunity to participate in the meeting “European Virtual Human Twins (VHT) Initiative. Accelerating innovation and making personalised medicine a reality through virtual human twins”, organised by DG CONNECT and the European AI Office, on 21 October in Brussels.

Launched in December 2023, the initiative already brings together over 90 organisations that have signed the VHT Manifesto, committing to the collaborative development and adoption of virtual human twins. The European Commission has allocated €100 million to support the initiative, in full alignment with key strategic priorities such as the AI Continent Action Plan, Apply AI, and the Life Sciences Strategy.

Some of the key messages highlighted during the event included:

  • without high-quality data and a truly secure, interoperable EU health data space, innovation cannot scale;
  • a shared vision is essential, rather than isolated projects;
  • doctors, researchers, patients, industry, and policymakers must work together from the very beginning;
  • the real value lies in improving patients’ lives, not in the technology itself.

Europe is not only innovating: it is building a shared, reliable, and scalable foundation capable of delivering real value for people.

🇸🇪 The 3rd TETRIS General Assembly has successfully concluded in Stockholm!

On 8-9 October, the TETRIS consortium gathered at the Karolinska Comprehensive Cancer Centre, hosted by our partner Karolinska University Hospital, for two days of scientific exchange, collaboration and discussions on the project`s progress and next steps. The meeting brought together consortium partners, Scientific Advisory Board members, Professor Alfons Hoekstra and Professor Carolyn Taylor, and patient representatives, Bröstcancerföreningen Amazona Stockholm and Associazione Cuore di Donna, providing an important opportunity to share results, exchange perspectives and strengthen collaboration across the different areas of research. @bcfamazona @brostcancerforeningen_amazona @associazione_cuoredidonna @Associazione Cuore di Donna

💡 Many key takeaways emerged from these two days, from making better use of existing clinical data to advance personalised risk prediction and exploring the potential of Digital Twins, to strengthening patient involvement and translating scientific advances into meaningful improvements in post-treatment care.

The General Assembly also featured educational sessions on AI in radiotherapy and Male breast cancer, broadcast from Stockholm and delivered by Maria Carmen De Santis from Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori di Milano, as well as valuable contributions from our Scientific and Patient Advisory Boards.
